Beijing, China -- A Historical and Cultural City |
With a 3,000-year history, Beijing has been a Capital city of China since
Mind dynasty. After more than 700 years, the historical sites - Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven,
the Summer Palace and the Great Wall are still maintain in good shape. Every year visitors from
around the world come to visit Beijing to experience the ancient China's art and culture and today
modern urban life.
The Forbidden City, located at center of Beijing, is one of many tourist
attractions in this capital city. It was the Palace of emperors in Ming and Qing dynasties.
This 720,000 square meters of land surrounded by palace moat and tall red wall. Inside the city
there are 9,000 rooms including a few important halls. Supreme Harmony Hall is the place where
the emperor's carved dragons chair was set for imperial edicts.
Persevering Hall is for royal banquets, and Palace Heavenly Purity is the
place where the emperors used to live. Ming and Qing dynasties treasures are displayed at east
side of the Palace. The Clock Museum displays old clocks which were gifts from the West. There are
many courtyards and the Imperial Gardens is a beautiful garden in the huge Forbidden City.
Tiananmen is the second most famous structure in China and another Beijing
tourist attraction. With 98 acres area, this 34.7 meters high structure was built in 1651. From
its high balcony the imperial edicts were read in China's ancient dynasties.
Temple of Heaven is a great architectural design of Ming Dynasty. The round
tower is surrounded by round wall called Echo Wall. The temple is set in the middle of a 667-acre
park with many old pine trees and cypress trees with over 500 years old.
Summer Palace is the most beautiful imperial park in China. This 717-acre
garden was built around the Kunming Lake in 12th century and was expanded in Qing dynasty for
emperors vacation. There is a 17-arch bridge across the Kunming Lake. The Long Corridor of Summer
Palace extends 728 meters along the Lake to the famous Qingyan Boat.
The Great Wall was built in 5th century as defensive ramparts against their
enemies. Today the Great Wall is China's most mighty monument and a world famous land mark
and tourist attraction. This wall is about 3,946 miles long and is the only object visible from
the space.
Other historic sites and tourist attractions in Beijing include Lama Temple
which displays 26 meter high Buddha (1694), Beihai Park's Nine Dragon Screen (1756), and
Temple of the Sleeping Buddha's Sakyamuni (1331).
