China -
World's most populated nation, with rich history, arts and culture |
China is located in Eastern Asia, bordering the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea, between North Korea and Vietnam.
With total land area about 9,326,410 square kilometers, China is slightly smaller than the United States and the world's fourth-largest country (after
Russia, Canada, and US).
Based on July 2004 estimate, China has about 1,298,847,624 population, including Han Chinese 91.9%, Zhuang, Uygur, Hui, Yi, Tibetan,
Miao, Manchu, Mongol, Buyi, Korean, and other nationalities 8.1%.
Standard Chinese or Mandarin (Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect) is the official language. But China has many regional dialects
including Yue (Cantonese), Wu (Shanghaiese), Minbei (Fuzhou), Minnan (Hokkien-Taiwanese), Xiang, Gan, Hakka, and some other minority
languages.
For centuries China has stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the
arts and sciences. But in the first half of the 20th century, China was beset by major famines,
military defeats, foreign occupation, and civil unrest. After 1980, Chinese government
continuously decentralized economic decision making, applied market-oriented system, and opened
the economy to increased foreign trade and investment. The result has been a quadrupling of GDP
since 1978 and now China stood as the second largest economy in the world after the US.
