Niagara Falls is the most well-known waterfalls in the world. This magnificent falls attracts
millions of worldwide visitors every year.
This famous Falls was formed about twelve thousand years ago by the action of glaciers.
Water flowing over Niagara Falls comes from four lakes - Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie
Lakes. After going over the falls it flows through Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and
the Atlantic Ocean.
The American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls are separated by Goat Island which is a part of the
U.S. New York State Reservation. The Horseshoe Falls is 170 feet high and has a brink of 2500 feet
long. The American Falls is 180 feet high and has a brink of 1,100 feet.
About 5 billion gallons of water, which is 20% of world's fresh water, originally flowed
over Niagara Falls per hour. Half of that water is now used to create the world's largest
electric power plant before reaching the Falls.
The first person to visit Niagara Falls was a priest, Father Louis Hennepin, in 1678.
In 1885, the Ontario Legislature passed the Niagara Falls Park Act establishing Ontario first
provincial parklands and on May 24, 1888, the Niagara Parklands were officially opened to the
public. Today, the Niagara Parks of Ontario includes about 1130 hectares (2800 acres).
The main road for travelling within the Niagara Parks is the world-famous Scenic Niagara
Parkway along the shoreline of the Niagara River.
The most exciting way to see Niagara Falls is aboard the world-famous "Maid of the Mist" tour
boat and let the boat takes you right into the spectacular spray of the falls.
