Singapore -- One of the world's most prosperous countries |
Singapore is one of the favorite Asian travel destinations. As one of the world's most prosperous
countries, Singapore is also a clean and safe city with beautiful parks, gardens, historical museums,
Southeast Asian special arts and culture, conveniences, and efficiency.
Singapore is located in Southeastern Asia between Malaysia and Indonesia. With a diamond-shaped main
island, an offshore Sentosa Island, and more than 50 smaller uninhabited islands, Singapore has
land area about 637 square kilometers.
Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, Singapore became an independent nation in 1965. It
subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries.
With strong international trading links and one of the world's busiest port, Singapore is blessed
with a highly developed and successful free-market economy, a remarkably open and corruption-free
business environment, stable prices, and the fifth highest per capita GDP in the world (as of the
year 2000).
