The Bahamas -- A Caribbean Paradise
|
The Bahamas is a chain of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast off the coast of Florida. This
islands chain, including New Providence Island, Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island, has land area
about 10,070 square kilometers, slightly smaller than Connecticut State of the United States.
The Bahamas has 299,697 (2004 estimate) population, including 85% black, 12% white, 3% Asian and
Hispanic. English is the official language in Bahamas.
The Bahamas attained independence from the UK in 1973. Today, the Bahamas is a stable, developing nation
with an economy heavily dependent on tourism and offshore banking. Tourism alone accounts for more than
60% of GDP and directly or indirectly employs 40% of the archipelago's labor force.
With warm and crystal clear waters, white and pink sandy beaches, luxury beachfront resorts, and a quick
25-minute flight from Florida's southeast coast, the Bahamas is one of the Caribbean favorite destinations
for tropical vacation.
