Bermuda is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 650 miles east off the coast of North
Carolina State of the United States. It has land area about 58.8 square kilometers, about 0.3 times
the size of Washington, DC.
Bermuda was first settled in 1609 by shipwrecked English colonists headed for Virginia. Tourism to the
island to escape North American winters first developed in Victorian times. Bermuda has developed into
highly successful offshore financial center. A referendum on independence was defeated in 1995 and
Bermuda is now still a British Crown colony.
Bermuda has 64,935 (2004 estimate) population, including 58% black, 36% white, 6% other. English is the
official language in Bermuda.
