St. Lucia -- A tropical paradise with natural wonders
|
St. Lucia is located between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and Tobago.
The island has total land area about 610 square kilometers, about 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC
of the United States.
St. Lucia has 164,213 (2004 estimate) population, including 90% black, 6% mixed, 3% East Indian, 1% white.
English is the official language in St. Lucia.
The island, with its fine natural harbor at Castries, was contested between England and France throughout
the 17th and early 18th centuries (changing possession 14 times); it was finally ceded to the UK in
1814. Self government was granted in 1967 and independence in 1979.
With tropical climate moderated by northeast trade winds, St. Lucia is a beautiful island with natural wonders.
Its famous landmark is the Pitons - twin volcanic peaks rising half a mile from the water. These mountains and
rain forests provide hikers some of the most spectacular trails on the planet.
