Micronesia is island group in the North Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the
way from Hawaii to Indonesia. It includes Pohnpei (Ponape), Chuuk (Truk) Islands, Yap Islands,
and Kosrae four major island groups with totaling 607 islands.
With total land area of 702 square kilometers, Micronesia is four times the size of
Washington, DC of the United States.
Micronesia has 108,155 (July 2004 estimate) population, including nine ethnic Micronesian
and Polynesian groups. English is the official and common language but Trukese,
Pohnpeian, Yapese, Kosrean, Ulithian, Woleaian, Nukuoro, Kapingamarangi are spoken by
ethnic groups.
In 1979 the Federated States of Micronesia, a UN Trust Territory under US
administration, adopted a constitution. In 1986 independence was attained under
a Compact of Free Association with the US.
Micronesia's economic activity consists primarily of subsistence farming and fishing.
Major industries include tourism, construction, fish processing, craft items from shell,
wood, and pearls.
The Federated States of Micronesia uses U.S. Dollar as its currency.
Micronesia Islands have adequate telephone system. In the year 2002, Micronesia has
about 6000 Internet users.
