Located in Western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border with Italy, Monaco has total land area just about 2 square kilometers, about three times the size of The Mall in Washington, DC of the United States. Monaco is second-smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See) and

No income tax and low business taxes
The principality also is a banking center and has successfully sought to diversify into services and small, high-value-added, nonpolluting industries. The state has no income tax and low business taxes and thrives as a tax haven both for individuals who have established residence and for foreign companies that have set up businesses and offices. Monaco, however, is not a tax-free shelter; it charges nearly 20% value-added tax, collects stamp duties, and companies face a 33% tax on profits unless they can show that three-quarters of profits are generated within the principality.
High living standards
The state retains monopolies in a number of sectors, including tobacco, the telephone network, and the postal service. Living standards are high, roughly comparable to those in prosperous French metropolitan areas. Based on 2011 data, Monaco GDP per capita (PPP) is about $85,500.
World’s most expensive real estate
Monaco has the world’s lowest poverty rate and the highest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita in the world. Monaco in 2012 had the world’s most expensive real estate market, at $58,300 per square meter.
Monaco uses euro (EUR) as its currency. In February 2015 each US dollar was exchanged for 0.89 euros.
