The world's second largest economy
For centuries China has stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the
arts and sciences. But in the first half of the 20th century, China was beset by major famines,
military defeats, foreign occupation, and civil unrest.
After 1980, Chinese government continuously decentralized economic decision making, moved the economy to a more market-oriented
system, and opened the economy to increased foreign trade and investment. The result has been a
quadrupling of GDP since 1978. In 2005, with its 1.30 billion people but a GDP of just $6,800 per
capita, China stood as the second largest economy in the world after the US. Recently China has
benefited from a huge expansion in computer Internet use. In 2005, China has about 111 million
Internet users. Foreign investment remains a strong element in China's remarkable economic growth.
Three Gorges Dam across the Yangtze River will be essentially completed in 2006 and will revolutionize electrification and flood control in the area.
In 2005, one US dollar is exchanged for about 8.1943 Chinese Yuan (CNY).
