Maldives -- A nation with tropical splendour |
A top travel and vacation destination
Maldives is one of Asia's major travel destinations and vacation paradises.
There are many luxury resorts in Maldives with spectacular scenery, ocean and beach settings, and
wonderful nature.
Located in Southern Asia and south-southwest of India, Maldives is
a small nation formed by 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls
(200 inhabited islands, plus 80 islands with tourist resorts).
Maldives has total land area about 300 square kilometers, about 1.7 times the size of Washington, DC
of the United States of America.
Maldives has about 359,008 (2006 estimate) population. Ethnic
groups include South Indians, Sinhalese, and Arabs. Maldivian Dhivehi is the official
language but English is spoken by most government officials.
The Maldives was long a sultanate, first under Dutch and then under British protection.
It became a republic in 1968, three years after independence. Tourism and fishing are
being developed on the Maldives archipelago. Tourism, Maldives largest industry,
accounts for 20% of GDP and more than 60% of the Maldives foreign exchange receipts.
Over 90% of government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes.
Fishing is a second leading sector. In late December 2004, a major tsunami left more
than 100 dead, 12,000 displaced, and property damage exceeding $300 million. Over the
past decade, real GDP growth averaged over 7.5% per year. As a result of the tsunami,
the GDP contracted by about 5.5% in 2005.
Maldives uses rufiyaa (MVR) as its currency. In 2005, exchange
rates was about 12.8 rufiyaa per US dollar.
Maldives establishes interatoll communication through microwave
links; all inhabited islands are connected with telephone and fax service.
Based on 2005 estimate, Maldives has about 19,000 Internet users.
