The first person to visit Niagara Falls was a priest, Father Louis Hennepin, in 1678. In 1885, the Ontario Legislature passed the Niagara Falls Park Act establishing Ontario first provincial parklands and on May 24, 1888, the Niagara Parklands were officially opened to the public. Today, the Niagara Parks of Ontario includes about 1130 hectares (2800 acres).

The main road for traveling within the Niagara Parks is the world-famous Scenic Niagara Parkway along the shoreline of the Niagara River.
