Jamaica has 2,695,867 (July 2003 estimate) population, including black 90.9%, East Indian 1.3%, white 0.2%, Chinese 0.2%, mixed 7.3%, other 0.1%. English is the official language in Jamaica.

Jamaica gained full independence within the British Commonwealth in 1962. Its economy depends heavily on tourism. It uses Jamaican dollar (JMD) as its currency. In 2002, exchange rate was about 48.4159 Jamaican dollars for one US dollar. Based on 2002 estimate, Jamaica has about 100,000 Internet users.

Today, tourism is a key industry in Jamaica, with most tourists from the United States; an increasingly large number of cruise ships visit the Jamaica Island.
