Ireland -- A charming and friendly European nation |
World favorite travel destination
Known as Emerald Isle, Ireland is one of the world attractive travel and vacation destinations because
of its charming scenery, historic cities and Irish friendliness.
Ireland is located in Western Europe, occupying five-sixths of the island of Ireland in the North
Atlantic Ocean, west of Great Britain. With total land area about 68,890 sq km, Ireland is slightly
larger than West Virginia of the United States.
Ireland has 3,969,558 (July 2004 estimate) population, including Celtic and English.
Over 40% of the population resides within 97 km of Dublin.
English is the official language generally used, Irish (Gaelic) spoken mainly in areas
located along the western seaboard area.
Ireland is a small, modern, trade-dependent economy with growth averaging a robust 8% in
1995-2002. The global slowdown, especially in the information technology sector, pressed
growth down to 2.1% in 2003. Agriculture, once the most important sector, is now
dwarfed by industry, which accounts for 46% of GDP and about 80% of exports and
employs 28% of the labor force. Although exports remain the primary engine for Ireland's growth,
the economy has also benefited from a rise in consumer spending, construction, and business
investment. In 2003, Ireland has about 1.26 million Internet users.
Ireland joined in launching the euro currency system in January 1999 along with 10 other EU
nations.
