-- around Maui Island
Maui Island, known as the Valley Isle, is formed by two volcanoes and connected by an isthmus. East Maui is the location
of majestic dormant volcano Haleakala. West Maui is formed by a extinct volcano
which is now called Puu Kukuui Mountain.
Today, flower farms, vineyards and agriculture stations spread over the Haleakala's western slopes. Puu Kukuui
Mountain, the wettest area on the earth, brings more rain to West Maui and provides a natural environment that
forms beautiful parks, tropical gardens and farms.
Besides parks and gardens, there are many pools and waterfalls spread over the Island. But most waterfalls and
pools are located along the Hana Highway toward sleepy little town - Hana. Ohea Gulch-"The seven sacred Pools" and
Wailua Falls are located 10 miles from Hana on Hana Highway. There are many
waterfalls well over 100 feet high. The sceneries created by these natural wonders
are breathtaking.
Haleakala National Park
Located in Maui Upcountry, Haleakala is one of best-known mountains in the world and Haleakala National
Park is the best known attractions in Maui. With 10,023-foot summit, Haleakala dormant volcano mountain is
the location of the Science City which provides astronomy research and education.
Maui Haleakala National Park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980.
Of its 28,655 acres, 19,270 are wilderness. Haleakala mountain top offers a spectacular 360° panoramic view.
The visual horizon in many places in the Park is up to 115 miles out to sea. In addition to spectacular sunrise
and sunset, even cloudy skies can offer amazing sights including rainbows, moonbows and halos seen around your
shadow. Millions of tourists from around the world travel to Maui every year to experience this wonderland magic.
Haleakala National Park has several scenic overlooks. Leveiwi Overlook at about
8,800-feet elevation on Haleakala is one of the lookouts. The Kalahaku Overlook, at the 9.000-feet-elevation,
is one of the famous outlooks.
Haleakala Visitor Center is the place to stop for a exhibition and is location to start a new journey.
Visitors should walk slowly up here because oxygen is at a lower concentration then sea level.
At Red Hill the elevation is 10,023 feet, and you have a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view. Haleakala National Park
is definitely a great place for hiking and camping.
